Our Water Wood crankbaits are available in both a high-gloss finish and a Satin Matte (SMS). While both have their uses, many customers have asked us about the development of the SMS finish and its optimal applications. Some of you may remember the heyday of cranking in Carolina lakes such as High Rock, Gaston, and Buggs Island, where old-school crankers would leave their plugs on the dashboards of their tow vehicles. While some may have assumed this was to fade the paint, the real purpose was to remove the shine. A matte finish, like those on traditional crankbaits, gives lures a more natural and discreet appearance in the water. While fish may appear vibrant and colorful above the surface, underwater they tend to be more subdued. In situations where fish are extra cautious, the matte finish can make all the difference.
